Websites, blogs, and social media are essential but possibly the dullest part of trying to create a game. But if the world doesn't know your game exists then no one is going to buy it. I could code a website from scratch but thought it would make more sense to use a provider so I get more time on my game. I've built my own Wordpress sites in the past but I thought the next level of abstraction would be the most efficient. So I turned to the well known website builder/provider Wix.

The biggest reason this was a mistake is that you can't post in one place and it appear on all your other platforms. There is a marketplace where you can add apps to add features to your site. Barely any of them work included in the home grown Wix apps. Then you have apps such as social media buttons which contain a random advertisement that you can remove for a few quid a month. You can add your own image links for free. The worst thing is trying these apps wreck your website so my advice is steer clear. Once you get used to the interface and the standard elements you can get a decent clean website going but you have to go through the pain of learning the bug ridden clunky interface and everyone inclduing Wix trying to extract more money from you usually for very little in return. For example to add a business e-mail it is another purchase. I just used a free gmail account and attached a custom link. The AI builder is also a nightmare so don't even think about it. If you try and escape it you end up with a dead site. Which then you try and replace and then suddenly you're in another purchase loop. Do not purchase more than one plan you can chop and change anything you like once you get used to the interface but it is laborious. My overall feeling is that most of the issues I've hit are due to people trying to squeeze cash from me for no real worth. There are downsides to using something like Wordpress You have to be security aware and you have to keep on top of your plugins. But if you're a coder I think it is a better way to go. But I'm stuck with Wix for a while, I will revisit the experience at a later date.
